What is Christian Science?
Christian Science is a religion discovered by Mary Baker Eddy in 1866, a woman who deeply studied and loved the teachings and healings of Christ Jesus, and his promises:
“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; …” (John 14:12 (to 1st ;))
“And these signs shall follow them that believe; … they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” (Mark 16:17 (to 1st ;), 18 3rd they)
Following a severe accident, from which friends and her minister feared she may not recover, she turned to her Bible, to a healing of Christ Jesus and was healed. In that healing experience she glimpsed what she later described as an understanding of “Life in and of Spirit, this Life being the sole reality of existence” (Miscellaneous Writings, 24:14-18).
She recognized her healing as the result of an ever-operative divine Principle — God’s great goodness and love governing human experience. It became clear to her that spiritual healing was based on divine laws of God, Spirit, and that these laws, these teachings, could be understood and applied by all. In searching the Scriptures she recognized that this was the way Christ Jesus, his disciples and apostles healed.
She sought thereafter to share with others her growing understanding of the Principle and laws behind her healing, and set them forth in her textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Many people have been healed by reading this book and assimilating its teachings. The last chapter is entitled: “Fruitage” and contains accounts of many healed by reading this textbook.
Mary Baker Eddy went on to establish her own church in 1879, the Church of Christ, Scientist. This church was founded to “reinstate primitive Christianity and its lost element of healing” (Manual of The Mother Church, p.17:8). The Mother Church, as the church is commonly known is located in Boston, Massachusetts, and branch churches are located throughout the world, including 7 congregations in Minnesota.
